FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When are the workshops?
There are two streams for workshops to ensure availability for participants around the world. Each stream will have the same content, so you need only attend one stream. The session times are:
STREAM A: UTC 08:00 - 12:00 Mondays 12th April, 26th April, 10th May, 24th May
STREAM B: UTC 20:00 - 00:00 Thursdays 15th April, 29th April, 13th May, 27th May
How do I join the workshop Zoom?
If you have already confirmed your preferred stream, you will receive a calendar invite from us (please add kiaora@activate.film to your email contacts or address book!) containing the Zoom link. You will also receive an email the day before with a button to join the Zoom workshop directly.
If you have not confirmed your stream, or if you get stuck - you can also join the Zoom workshop from the button on the Programme Hub. Click into the appropriate module, and you will see buttons to join each stream. Please note that these buttons will not be active until the facilitators have opened the Zoom session.
Why do I need to confirm my stream?
A large portion of our workshops take place in break-out rooms, or small group discussions. We need to assign participants to the appropriate break out room ahead of time, so it helps to know how many participants will be in any given session. We also need to know which participants will be in each session so we can ensure that any language interpretation and accessibility tools are arranged ahead of time.
If you haven’t yet confirmed your stream, please email us on kiaora@activate.film and indicate your preference.
Can I attend a different stream?
If you can’t make your usual stream for any reason, you are welcome to attend the alternative stream for that module. You can join that session at the join button in the appropriate module page. You don’t need permission to attend a different stream - we understand that sometimes things come up! - but if you will have some notice, it’s always appreciated if you can advise facilitators ahead of time.
Who will facilitate the training?
The training is facilitated by Activate Agency - we are an Indigenous and Disabled led social impact agency based in Aotearoa New Zealand. Activate specialise in climate justice work that centres Indigenous and disabled communities, and your workshop facilitators have experience working with Indigenous Peoples organisations internationally.
What is the scope of each session?
Each session will cover a different theme, from an introduction to decolonisation as a concept and practice, to its relevance to the climate movement, and all the way through to unpacking our own implicit biases and incorporating decolonial strategies into our own activism, work, and personal practice. Each workshop session will be complemented by independent learning resources and an online discussion group where you can share your thoughts and reflections with your colleagues to further your learning.
Do I have to attend the live workshop stream?
We ask that participants attend the live workshop streams wherever possible, as this helps provide for more organic and robust discussions amongst the group and enables our facilitators to better support participants on their learning journeys. However, if you must miss a workshop session - just let our facilitator know, and they can arrange for you to either attend the alternative stream, or you can catch up by watching a recording of the workshop in your own time.
Will the training be interactive?
Yes, the workshop sessions will be interactive, including multiple discussion groups, as well as use of other digital engagement tools to keep sessions interesting and engaging. The workshop sessions will also be complemented with independent online learning, through access to this online hub with a variety of written, audio, and video content to suit your own learning style and preferences, and through an online discussion group.
What language will the training be in?
The training will be conducted in English. However, Stream B will also have simultaneous Spanish interpretation for those who require it. Please reach out to kiaora@activate.film if you require Spanish interpretation for the workshops or any other resources.
How will I be kept informed about the programme?
All participants will receive regular email updates about the programme, and will also be able to access information via this online hub with learning resources and details about upcoming workshops.
How many hours per week should I allocate to complete the programme well?
We recommend setting aside 2 hours per week for your independent learning during the programme - this includes engaging with the supplementary reading material, podcasts, and video resources that are recommended and available through the online hub, as well as engaging in discussions with your peers through the LinkedIn group. However, there are no tests or homework tasks to be quizzed on - so you will get out of this course what you put in!
How can I access training materials and resources?
This hub will be the main platform for accessing training materials and resources, including suggested readings, videos, podcasts, worksheets, and other resources that complement the workshop content.
Participants will also be invited to join a LinkedIn group where facilitators will share relevant resources to prompt discussion. This is a great space for participants to ask any additional questions, and support each other’s learning throughout the programme.
Is there a cost to participate in this programme?
No, the costs for this programme are covered by CAN International.
How will this programme be made accessible for people with disabilities?
Activate are a social impact agency with significant experience in accessibility and disability rights, so the programme will be delivered with accessibility and disability justice in mind - this includes use of image descriptions and audio descriptions where appropriate, and there will be breaks throughout the sessions. Video resources provided will have captions and/or transcripts available.
We can also provide live captions, sign language, or other accessibility components as required. During the registration process, participants will be able to indicate any accessibility requirements, and will be contacted by the Activate team to ensure their requirements are met.
What is the LinkedIn group for?
During programme registration, the majority of participants indicated LinkedIn as the preferred platform for group discussion. This is a private group, only accessible to members of the programme, and provides a space to continue discussions from the workshops, share information and resources, and hopefully form connections with your colleagues and fellow climate activists to make real change in decolonising our climate movements and organisations.
By joining the group you will also gain access to additional materials, facilitated discussions, and direct access to the facilitation team throughout the programme should you have any questions. However, most importantly, this group will enable you to give and receive support from your fellow participants, so we can all encourage each other on our decolonial journeys.
As this is a private group, your LinkedIn connections will not be able to see what you’ve posted in the group, and you also don’t need to be connected to the facilitators or other programme members to join the group, so don’t worry about .
